While the Spanish sought out massive cities to plunder, regions that had smaller populations and fewer resources, such as those in central and southern Argentina, tended to languish. In fact, the first mission to land on the shores of Argentina was a maritime expedition under the command of Juan Díaz de Solís. In October 1515, a fleet of three ships departed Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Spain in search of the southern passage to the Pacific, and while cruising off the shore of Portuguese Brazil, the fleet encountered the mouth of the Río de la Plata (“River of Silver”). The Río de la Plata is the wide estuary formed by the confluence of the Uruguay and the Paraná Rivers, which can be described as an estuary, a gulf or a marginal sea, although calling it an estuary perhaps serves the purpose best. It offered an ideal port, and while sailing into it in 1516, Juan Díaz de Solís encountered the mouths of the Uruguay and Paraná Rivers. The first use of the term Argentina dates back to this expedition, as de Solís described the “River of Silver.”
